Gainesville is Florida’s arts town, pure and simple.
Here, our orchestra is filled with research scientists, our indie scene is teeming with inventors and your kid’s soccer coach may be an award-winning poet. Here, the artists are the pioneering voice for our rapidly growing creative economy. This very web portal is an entrepreneurial project, with artists as the architects and producers.
Every consultant we bring in tells us, “Market yourselves as a cultural destination!”
We’re being recognized as the “small city with big talent” and newcomers tell us our talent levels are “more than a little intimidating.” So how did we attract this rare concentration of creatives? What’s going on in Gatortown?
Over the past 200 years, creatives came to explore, found their muses in our wild and mysterious environs—and simply stayed. There is an undeniable energy in this place—maybe because we live so close to the Floridan Aquifer, source of the artesian springs that bubble up through more than 1000 openings in the earth; maybe from our ancient geological connections to Africa; maybe because we’re the place where the northern hardwoods commingle with the southern tropicals.
Here, we cross-pollinate ideas as well as botanicals. We’re a wellspring of ideas and headwaters for creative initiatives.
Through our artists, we enjoy a rich sense of place. Our artists, writers, photographers, filmmakers, craftsmen, chefs, farmers, naturalists, musicians, storytellers and performers are inspired by and connected to the natural wonders of this remarkable place that’s been referred to for hundreds of years as Florida’s Eden.
We are the southeastern epicenter for plein air contemporary landscape painting. Our enclave of environmental writers gives voice to our connection to the land and the importance of preserving the environment that sustains our economy just as it sustains us. Our museums are nationally renowned for their collections, exhibitions and technological innovation. We’ve birthed rock-and-roll legends and produced a host of nationally recognized photographers and filmmakers.
As you can well imagine, it’s a daunting task to gather all the information about our arts/culture scene into one arena for you to explore. We’ve divided our cultural offerings into genre categories with endless resource links and featured stories to follow.
We welcome you to participate in our cultural community.
